Fair Employment Agency, a new not-for-profit recruitment organization for foreign domestic workers opens in Hong Kong. It is a social enterprise with a charitable mission, its directors receive no remuneration, there are no dividends and there are restrictions about the distribution of capital. It is the first agency of its kind in Hong Kong.

Fugitive Hong Kong-based human-trafficking suspect invested in child-monitoring app

A man based in Hong Kong is wanted by Thai police for alleged human trafficking. Thai police raided his Bangkok condominium and discovered nine surrogate babies, seven nannies and a pregnant woman. Thai police suspect that he fathered the children with nine different Thai women in order to sell them.

Sino-Burmese Border Sees Majority of Human Trafficking Rescues

Burma’s anti-human trafficking police rescued 42 Burmese women along the Sino-Burmese border in the first seven months of the year, helping them to escape forced marriages, labor exploitation and other human rights abuses. In China, the gender disparity has led Chinese men to seek brides overseas. On the Burmese side, poverty leads to victims’ vulnerability.

Philippines: 13 women rescued from suspected human traffickers

Police rescued 13 would-be victims of human trafficking in an operation in which they also arrested a former Marine sergeant and three accomplices as they were preparing the ship the women supposedly to Lebanon via Malaysia.

India: Human trafficking – Chhattisgarh first state to implement placement agency act

Chhattisgarh becomes the first state to launch Private Placement Agencies (Regulation) Act with formation of required rules against placement agents. The Act bars any person, agent or agency from taking minor girls out for domestic or any sort of work, without having license.

 

 

 

United Kingdom: Human trafficking and south-east Asian women — it’s not all about sex work

UK’s Department for International Development (DfID) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) have launched a £9.75m anti-trafficking initiative aimed at helping to prevent 100,000 south-east Asian women from being trafficked into forced labour in the garment industry and as domestic workers. This Initiative recognizes widespread problem of labour trafficking and aims to help women working in garment and domestic industries

South Asia: UNODC initiates regional cooperation projects to address human trafficking across borders

A United Nations initiative titled Preventing Trafficking of women and girls in South Asia aims at increasing cooperation and strengthening capacities of law enforcement, immigration and labour officers in Bangladesh and India to detect, investigate and prosecute human trafficking for forced domestic work.
