U.S. releases Trafficking in Persons Report 2014

On 20 June, the U.S. Department of State released the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report 2014. For this year, Hong Kong remains at Tier 2 and China has moved up from Tier 3 to Tier 2 Watch List. Both Malaysia and Thailand have been downgraded from Tier 2 Watch List to Tier 3.

US human trafficking report misleading, says Hong Kong

Hong Kong has responded to the recent release of the U.S. Department of State’s Trafficking in Persons Report 2014 which, for the first time, has identified the city as a source territory, destination and transit point for trafficking. A government official says the report does not fully reflect the unfailing commitment and continuous efforts of the government in the fight against human trafficking.

Thailand deeply disappointed with downgrading in US human trafficking report

Thailand was downgraded to Tier 3 in the recent Trafficking in Person Report 2014, the lowest possible ranking for national responses to fighting modern day slavery. “It is a very great disappointment for us and we disagree with the ranking,” said acting Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow.
