Research identifies 140 human trafficking victims in Ottawa

A report released by Persons Against the Crime of Trafficking Humans (PACT), was the culmination of nine months of research into human trafficking in Ottawa that concluded it might be much more widespread than initially suspected. The report’s lead author, Elise Wohlbold, said, “There are far more (victims) than what people were expecting.”

Campaign targets modern slavery in UK

The government is launching the first nationwide campaign aimed at raising awareness of modern slavery in the UK to encourage the public to identify signs of slavery and report them to a new national helpline. In 2013, the National Referral Mechanism (NRM), received 1,746 referrals of potential victims of trafficking – a 47% increase on the previous year.

51 human trafficking victims rescued in Melaka

The Bukit Aman Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Unit rescued 51 illegal foreign women, aged 16 to 34, at two entertainment outlets in Malim-Jaya. They comprised 40 Vietnamese, 6 Chinese, and 5 Thai women who did not have valid travel documents.
