India: ‘gpower’ mobile app to help girls fight trafficking and child marriage

A mobile app is giving a new ray of hope to girls in villages of some West Bengal districts, where incidents of child marriage and girl trafficking have been alarming in the past few decades. “GPower” was launched as a joint venture of Accenture and NGO CINI (Child in Need Institute) following a survey on the condition of educational programs among girls. It has helped in saving over 200 girls spread around 20 villages from either being trafficked or being a victim of child marriage, its makers claim.

USA: bill calls for $1.5b to combat human trafficking

The U.S. would create a $1.5 billion international fund to combat human trafficking, under bipartisan legislation put on a fast track this week by Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee. The End Modern Slavery Initiative Foundation would use public and private money to finance anti-trafficking programs in places where men, women and children are trapped in lives of forced labor or sexual servitude.

UNODC Office in Pakistan in collaboration with the Federal Investigation Agency published a research report on human trafficking in Pakistan. Pakistan is a source, transit and a destination country for human trafficking and migrant smuggling. The problem manifests itself within the country and across borders. Internally, the provinces of Sindh and Punjab remain a source of concern with high instances of bonded labour in agriculture, brick making and other industries including ship breaking.
